Two Named After Prominent Citizens, One Relocated School Retains Its Current Title
In votes taken at the June 8, 2005 Board of Education meeting, three Lincoln County schools were named. One will bear the name of a former superintendent and another, a football coach; a synopsis of each school’s name and vote is as follows:
* The New Elementary School: Norris S. Childers Elementary School
When Lincolnton City and Lincoln County Schools merged in 1974, Norris S. Childers was the first Superintendent of the district. Childers’ name was selected in a four-to-three vote.
* The New Middle School: Lincolnton Middle School
With the current Lincolnton Middle School facility closing its doors, the Board of Education named the new middle school Lincolnton Middle School. Currently under construction, the new Lincolnton Middle School received its name in a five-to-two vote.
* The New Intermediate School: F.D. “Jack” Kiser Intermediate School
To be housed in the former Lincolnton Middle School building, the new Intermediate School will be named after F.D. "Jack" Kiser, former principal and long-time Lincolnton High School football coach. In a five to one-and-one vote, Kiser’s name was selected out of three options before the Board of Education.
Board of Education policy requires schools named after individuals be named after deceased persons only. Policy further mandates the Board of Education give schools names which are not deemed “confusing.”
